A Holistic Approach to Feeling Like Your Best Self

by | Mar 28, 2022 | Holistic Health

Often, I hear from patients that they are frustrated with their health issues. They are doing everything right- eating healthy, exercising, managing stress- and they still don’t feel good. By taking a holistic approach to their treatment, I am able to get them moving forward again.

Three Reasons Why You May Not Be Feeling Your Best

  1. Nutrition:  Even if you are eating as healthy as possible many of our nutrients are lacking in our foods now due to non organic farming and soil depletions of nutrients.
  2. Genetics:  Having certain gene variants can predispose someone  to a health issue. This does not mean you will end up with these issues as we can support these genes with diet, lifestyle and supplementation
  3. Environmental Toxins or Stressors: This can include toxins such as air pollution, cleaning products, and skin care products. Environment can also include stress such as living  or working in a stressful situation.

Of these 3 reasons, there are many aspects we can control, but there are also many that we cannot control.  For example you can control toxins in your home by using green cleaning supplies, but you cannot control the toxins out of your home such as air pollution. You can eat healthy, but you cannot control the nutrients lacking in our food. However, don’t distress.  We can work together to figure out where you need support and how you can begin feeling your best. Problem solving is what I love to do!

Assessing Your Needs Through My Holistic Approach

With each patient, I asses their specific needs through thorough intake that includes:
Family health history:  It’s important to understand your parental and sibling health to understand if you are genetically predisposed to an issue.
Diet: How are you currently eating? It is mostly processed foods? Are you eating  a rounded diet?
Lifestyle: Are you working or living in a stressful or toxic environment? Do you take time out for self care and stress relief?
Your health history: Have you taken a lot of antibiotics in your life? Were you sick a lot as a child? Exposed to toxins?

Lab testing: Various lab tests may be run to help assess nutritional deficiencies or hormonal imbalances as well as any toxins that may be keeping you stuck. I like to think outside the box and check markers that may have never been assessed to find the underlying cause of your issue. Examples include: Micronutrient testing, Sex hormones, Thyroid hormones (not just TSH), Adrenal Hormones, Blood Sugar, Stool Testing for pathogens or candida.

Once I have a good picture as to what is creating the inflammation, we take a holistic approach to treat the underlying cause with dietary changes, supplements, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and stress reduction. I believe that supplements should do just that – supplement a healthy diet, not replace it. I recommend supplements to fill in any gaps in the diet. For example, if someone doesn’t like fatty fish, then I recommend Omega 3’s, to support genetic predispositions and to support detoxification.

If you are feeling stuck, don’t be too hard on yourself. That just creates more stress!  Book an appointment with me, and let’s take a holistic approach to get your body back into balance.
